Is the 20x2 the same thing as a 2002a?
Yes. 2002 is the shorthand for the 20 character by 2 line format, in the same way that 1602 is used for 16 x 2. Both use the HD44780 compatible bus.
Which polariser should I choose for a 20x2?
Yellow-green STN is the lowest cost and reads well indoors, blue STN gives a dark background with light characters, and FSTN gives a black and white appearance with the highest contrast. All three are stocked with a white LED backlight.
Is the 20x2 a direct replacement for a 1602a?
It is wider and has a different outline, so check the cut-out. Electrically it uses the same character LCD bus, so firmware changes are usually limited to the line width setting.
Can the 20x2 run at 3.3 V?
